The mission of The Archive is simple: to preserve historically significant objects and make them accessible to a global audience through the web. By digitizing and carefully documenting these materials, we aim to ensure that the legacy of Bon Homme Richard is available to researchers, veterans, families, and enthusiasts everywhere.

At present, the collection includes items dating from the ship's commissioning in 1944 through her decommissioning in 1971, with many artifacts spanning the years in between. While we are proud of what has been preserved so far, there is always more of the story to tell. History is not only found in official records, but in letters home, photographs, cruise books, uniforms, personal notes, and the small keepsakes that carry individual memory.

For this reason, we respectfully welcome donations of mementos, memorabilia, photographs, documents, or records related to the ship and those who served aboard her. Every item, no matter how small, helps us build a more complete and meaningful historical record.

I understand that trust is not given lightly, and that parting with items that may carry deep personal or family significance can be difficult. As an independent organization, it is natural to compare us to larger and more established institutions, and to question whether a smaller archive can offer the same level of care and permanence.

Large national museums and archives serve an important role in preservation, but their scale often means that donated objects are placed into long-term storage, cataloged, and rarely displayed. Our approach is intentionally different. Items entrusted to The Archive are not simply stored. They are researched, contextualized, and made accessible. Rather than being reduced to an accession number, each contribution becomes part of a narrative that connects objects to the people and stories behind them.

With The Archive, your contribution will not be buried in a vault or lost among thousands of holdings. It will be preserved with care and presented online as part of a living, accessible history, available to families, scholars, veterans, and future generations around the world. Our goal is not only to safeguard artifacts, but to ensure they continue to speak.
